The PGBSSC prides itself in offering developmentally appropriate programs to all levels and ages of skaters. The club follows Speed Skating Canada’s Long Term Participant and Athlete Development model (LTPAD), shown below. According to this model, children and athletes who get active stay active and reach the greatest heights of sport achievement when they do the right things at the right times.
Speed Skating Canada’s Age Class Designations
*ST = Short Track, LT = Long Track
Through the PGBSSC program, athletes may choose a competitive or recreational route to achieve their personal goals. There are four skating groups: FUNdamental/Beginner, Novice/Intermediate, Advanced, and Masters. There is some overlap between the categories in Speed Skating Canada’s LTPAD and the skating groups in the PGBSSC program. Skaters may move from one group to another based on age and ability, but even though there are ages associated with each stage, the participant’s skills (emotional, social, and physical) are also considered.
