Week of October 15th, 2017

16/10/2017

Good evening Blizzard families,

All of our skaters are looking great on the ice, it is great to see new and old faces around Kin1. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask, any of our "more experienced" parents can point you in the direction of someone who can help.

A reminder to all Learn to Skate families - as part of the Learn to Skate program, skaters are entitled to compete in one local competition. The PG Blizzard are hosting the Central Interior Challenge on Saturday, November 25th, 2017. Watch for more information in the coming weeks.

1. Fort St. James Officials Clinic

On behalf of the Fort St. James Falcons, I am forwarding the following message from Sandra Sulyman:

Our club is hosting a Level 1 Official Clinic the Friday evening before our meet, from 5:30 to ~ 8:00 pm.

REQUEST:  I am hoping that you would be able to share this announcement and also promote attendance if there are any parents needing to take the course.
  •  Please note that the physical address for the District office is 477 Stuart Drive West.  This is missing from the announcement.
  •  Parents wanting to register to attend can contact me directly.

Thank you for helping with this!

2. Upcoming Meets

Notes regarding upcoming meets from Emily Akerley, Meet Entry Coordinator (theakerley6@gmail.com)

2 things regarding upcoming meets:

1- Ft. St. James: Deadline for registration forms and cheques (or cash) for Ft. St. James meet is TUES OCT 17. I have re-attached the info/forms.

2- Kamloops Classic Chill will place Saturday Nov 4. Registration forms due TUES OCT 24. Forms and info attached.

This year, please add times on the forms before you submit. Instructions attached in case you missed the last message. Please save these instructions so you have them.

3. Upcoming PG Officials Course and Information

We are hosting a Level 1 Officials Course at Canfor House by the Oval the night before our meet, Friday November 24. Info attached. Anyone interested, please let me know directly, by email theakerley6@gmail.com.

Cost will be covered by the BCSSA. Taking this course does not commit you to anything. It is beneficial to anyone new or old to speed skating and officiating and/or it will allow you the potential to become a Level 1 Official in your interested position after assisting at some meets during the year, if you so choose.

So as many of you know, our meets are all run by volunteers! In order for the meets to run for our kids, there needs to be parent volunteers that are willing to help out. So, please consider officiating this season! You don't need any experience to get started and you can chose a position that might interest you. Most start out with timing, place judging or even helping kids get their skate guards on after a race. There are other positions such as:

  • Referee
  • Starter
  • Meet Coordinator/Competitors Steward
  • Recorder
  • Timer
  • Place Judge
  • Lap Counter
  • Heat Box Steward (Clerk of the Course)
  • Announcer
  • Track Steward
  • Other volunteer roles (runner, water buckets, gatekeeper, hospitality etc.)
You do not need to be a "certified official" to volunteer, just let us know you want to help out and what position you'd like to try. You can help out at our meet as well as any other local meet. Our local clubs all try to help each other with meets.

For those of you who have officiated before in one of these positions and are interested in Upgrading to a Level 1 Official by the end of the season, in the position that you've been practicing, please let me know and I can help find out what you need to do.

Anyone interested in helping out at the PG meet on Nov.25, see Kerri Mcleod, the Meet Coordinator, or let me know.

Lots of information! I'm still learning too! If you have any questions please email me directly at theakerley6@gmail.com or corner me at practice. If I don't know the answer, I can find someone who does!

Thank you!
Any Q email me directly theakerley6@gmail.com.

Meet Entry Coordinator
Officials Liaison

4. Equipment

Here is a quick reminder of safety equipment that is required to be worn by all skaters for short track https://www.bcspeedskating.ca/skate-with-us/required-equipment/

Quick reminder that Speed Skating Canada recommends that helmets have a lifespan of 5 years, please check the date in your helmet to confirm it is safe for your skater to wear on the ice.

Also, the club is looking for donations of soft guards for our learn to skate program. If you have an older pair that are no longer in use please bring them to Dave Konwicki, Equipment Manager.

5. Ice Cancelled - Hallowe'en October 31st

Correction to last week's message, ALL ICE is cancelled on October 31st.
